Mix 96
Buffalo's Best Variety Mix 96!
Mix 96 (WMSX) is an FM radio station licensed to and broadcasting from Buffalo, New York on 96.1 FM, which has a hot-leaning adult contemporary format.
The station is owned by Townsquare Media and has studios based in the Rand Building downtown; the station's transmitter is located on the roof of the same building.
The station signed on the air as WBNY-FM in 1966 as a sister station to WJJL, an AM station at 1440, in Niagara falls. (The call letters WBNY were previously used on WYSL, and this station is unrelated to today's WBNY, a College radio station on 91.3 FM). At the time, WJJL and WBNY were owned by Niagara Frontier Broadcasting Corp. In 1973, the station was acquired by McCormick Broadcasting. The station adopted the call letters WJYE on February 1, 1979, and was known as "JOY-FM-96". The station's format has rarely varied from light music throughout its history; it adopted its current AC format in 1988 after many years as a beautiful music / easy-to-listen station and only converted as the latter formats dropped heavily in status. The radio station used the "Joy-FM" branding for many years, although other brands were used with some interruptions in between. Historically, from mid-November to New year's, it also carried a Christmas music format (usually the format changed within a few hours of competing WTSS).
In 1995, WJYE dropped the Joy 96 brand and began to be identified by the call sign WJYE. In the late 2000s, he returned to the "Joy 96" brand. In the late 1990s, WJYE was acquired by Infinity Broadcasting, which was later incorporated into CBS Radio.
In the summer of 2000, Delilah was added to the evenings.
Lance diamond was the station's Saturday night host for most of the 1990s and 2000s. The station began broadcasting over the Internet in November 2006. Also in 2006, WJYE, along with its sister Buffalo stations, were sold to Regent Broadcasting, which was later renamed Townsquare Media.
Starting in 2007, the station switched from its former soft rock format to a more adult, contemporary format. Recently, the radio station has added limited rhythmic songs to its playlist that match their format, but they are mostly rare in WJYE's playlist. It is one of three AC stations in the Buffalo radio market, one of which is WTSS, along with CHRE-FM in St. Catharines, Ontario, although these two stations are more of a Hot AC category by nature.
On September 2, 2014, WJYE changed its call signs to WMSX and changed its on-air branding to Mix 96. The format itself did not change from previous years, although Christmas music ceased until the 2018 winter season. The nationally syndicated Delilah, which aired on 96.1 for nearly two decades, moved to WECK in January 2016. Delilah returned to 96.1 in February 2019.
On December 25, 2018, after playing Christmas music since mid-November, WMSX was renamed "96.1 The Breeze". The format changed to a softer AC, and it follows the example of many stations across the country based on the original "98.1 The Breeze" in San Francisco. The station described the format as" modified soft rock", reverting to the format the station used until 2007, and brought back Joe chill, the station's previous morning host of that era (Chill was on WECK for a short time).
